Taking Time for Health

It's a new year and a time to make resolutions. Hopefully you survived the holiday eating and are on your way to a great year. I myself have vowed to work on my lifestyle and loose the ten pounds I have been trying to loose for over a year. In November of 2003 I wrote Reality Nutrition . Where I vowed to find out why I didn't have time for my health and fix the problem.

So I found out why I didn't have time. I was over extended and tired because I was not taking care of myself. I decided that it was time to make time for myself. I made a list of everything I did all day and then highlighted the activities the involved taking care of me. Can anyone guess how many where highlighted? If you life is like this it's time for a change. Then I made a list of what I could do to make more time for taking care of me? The big answer here was to set boundaries and hold people accountable to them. The other big answer was to accept responsibility where it was mine and to let go what was not. The funny thing is that I do not think anyone is suffering here, not work, kids or home. The difference is that in doing less and delegating I am getting more done and in a better mood. I am a firm believing in starting small and doing what is the easiest first and letting the rest follow.

I thought the most important thing I could do to take care of myself was to eat breakfast. Breakfast has always been a barrier to my health. I had all the reasons, did not have time and was not hungry. However, my body and your body need food after eight or more hours without fuel. Many studies have shown that people who eat breakfast actually eat less calories during the entire day then those who skip breakfast. What I found was that I would start working and never get to a quitting point. Then I was starved, so I went out to eat and not only did I spend a lot of money, but I ate way too much. I literally force myself to stop work and eat by 9:00 each morning and I fell so much better. There have been many benefits to this. It saves me time and money, because eating out really does take a long time. The other benefit I noticed was that I was not craving sugar late at night. Now I am hungry around 8:30 or 9:00 and I know longer have to force myself to eat.
