Holiday Eating

© Stephanie Hembree

Last month I wrote about the reality of nutrition. I have spent some time realizing why I have no time and a funny thing happened. When I admitted that I had too much work and could not get it done, I got help instead of criticism. I also got more work done when I had eaten and was able to focus. While I have made some advances with my health and eating, the holidays snuck in on me. So, this month I would like to discuss fitting the holidays into your reality. There are some really great resources on the World Wide Web, let's take a look at just five of them.

The first reference comes to us from Nutrition.gov, Eat Right During the Holiday Season. This short article offers some practical tips as well as some references to holiday recipes.

The second is from the Weston A. Price Foundation, Seven Tips to Help You Eat Healthy During the Holidays... Without Alienating yourself from the People you Love! The seven tips are: bring a healthy dish to pass, have the party at your house, arrive later, eat before you go, learn to say no, avoid preaching and take the focus off food.

The third is from Wise Concepts, Quick, Convenient & Healthy Ideas for Busy People Holiday Survival: A Guide for the Busy Person. This article offers some tips, talks about the stress of the holidays, actual protein needs and a couple recipes.

The fourth is from Health AtoZ, your Family Health Site, Survivor's Guide to the 'Eating Season' Holiday weight gain is addressed in this article and it offers some practical tips as well as talking about exercise during the season.

Fifth and certainly not least from the National Agricultural Library/USDA Food and Nutrition Information Center, Holiday Food and Nutrition Resources This publication was prepared for nutrition educators so it's a little technical, but well worth wading through. It's basically a list of resources that is divided into three parts. The first lists electronic resources, the second part deals with journal articles and the third part lists library resources such as books, curricula and videotapes. This reference is 23 pages long and I think anything you are looking for can be found in here.

To complete this article I would like to offer some of my own thoughts about enjoying the holidays. This is a wonderful time to relax and explore holiday traditions with friends and families. It should not be a stressful time to be looking for the perfect present or starving your-self. Make it a time to renew family traditions or make new ones. Take time to pamper your-self. Do make sure that you eat well. This will take planning, as I have pointed out in the past, eating well just does not come naturally to most of us. It's something we need to think about. So, make sure that you do not over extend at this hectic time of year. Take the time to plan, shop, prepare and eat some really good food. If you find you must eat out, make some wise choices. Above all have a joyous holiday season and a happy new year.
