VOICES OF SPRING, stage left, out the EXIT door. Infact, it would be downright snobbish to disapprove of the great new wave of popularity swept over the world by New Age Singers such as Charlotte Church, Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli. Their contribution in respect to rejuvenating the songs of antiquity are invaluable. They seem to have successfully blended the old world with the new. However, at what cost to the artistry of vocal technique...? I WONDER ? The voice is every bit, if not more intricately balanced than the beautiful art of Ballet. It's delicate movements require concentrated practise and dedication, controlled by the simple encompassing LOVE of the vocal art form itself. The main issue here is ego versus artform. Are we or you the student learning to sing for praise and popularity OR is singing engained in your very being? It's a tough question, but do you, honestly know the answer? It's something to think about. Beginning students, might do well to follow a prescribed series of songs by composer such as Henry Purcell, Thomas Arne, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Rodger Quilter, Anderson, Schubert, Faure and Antonin Dvorak. There are of course excellent musical syllabus' available through various music stores and the Royal Academy of Music, Toronto, Canada.. Here, they list vocal grades and applicable repertoire. If you are an emerging singer, PLEASE, think about your instrument and give it some gentle respect and care. Singers come and singer go but TRUE ARTISTS, stay and strive for the LOVE of the ART. According to author, philosopher, Aldous Huxley,"After silence that which come nearest to expressing the unexpressable is music." I tend to agree and might go a step further to say, " That which moves closer to the heavens and God is the the SINGING VOICE."
