THE SINGING OM

winter2Lit1
An old, Jewish Legend says , that after GOD created the world and mankind, he asked the Angels for their opinion. The Angels replied, " The only thing missing Lord, is the vibration of praise ". So GOD, created, the voice of the birds, the whispering of the wind and the murmuring of the ocean. Then, GOD created from silence, SOUND and MUSIC, which he implanted into the HEART and VOICE of mankind.

Whenever I hear a beautiful voice, I think, surely our talents have exceeded GODS' dream of creation. Singing is one of those omnipotent treasures that allow insight into the inner gifts and expectations of the human race.

So, how does one collect this snowflake and preserve each tiny, perfectly crafted point? It's impossible, if the individual does not realize the patience and dedication needed to perpetuate the artform. Even then, its a risky business.

Everyone has a certain amount of vitality or psychosomatic energy which is called PRANA, in Sanskrit pronounced ( prah-nah ). PRANA, literally means, BREATH or LIFE.

BREATHING begins naturally from the moment we are born. We do not have to be taught how to breath. BREATH is our constant companion, computing his/her way though the brain, to the lungs and diaphram, which is our breathing system or the intregal working system of our body.

Every 24 hours, humans take in approximately, 15,000 to 30,000 breaths. Sometimes, we malfunction due to shallow or improper breathing. The truth is, we take advantage of our inner respiratory system by lack of conscious breathing. Basically we are remise in making ourselves aware of BREATH and how it works within our bodies.

Attemping to explain or teach the unique science of SINGING is very difficult. Vocal production is based on anatomical principles. I do not wish to become too intense,so, let us divide breath into three sections, utilizing a triangle. BREATH is the BASE, RESONANCE is the LEFT SIDE and COLOR is the RIGHT SIDE. Concentrate and visualize this shape in your mind.

Use BREATH as the base of DISCOVERY for your singing voice. Take a moment to ask yourself these questions... Where am I singing from ? Is it the Chest, Mid-lung section, Diaphram or lower abdominal region ? How does the breathing feel in all of these areas? You may want to experiment with your fuel capacity by inhaling/exhaling and counting your breath.

Keep a journal or daily, weekly, monthly log to record your progress and solutions to any conscious breathing concerns. I used to record myself on the tape recorder, listening to vocalized breath and vowels. It can be quite exciting to realize breath and vowel progressions, which are very instumental in the study of vocal pathology.
