YOU ARE YOUR OWN INSTRUMENT... So, where are the GO buttons.
the BREATH buttons, the HIGH and LOW buttons. Singers don't come with the nuts and bolts of technology.
A singer simply does what comes naturally. So learn to be sensitive about how the voice feels. Is it tight, stretched, sore or impassive? Most classical vocalists understand their own psycological character, realizing that stress, nerves and emotion will greatly affect the quality of sound and the disposition of the diaphramic breathing. Every aspect of classical singing demands, what is called a the ' WHOLE BODY ' approach. My next article will be called " THE SINGING OM " ". In it, we will review the importance of creating a singing environment within. KNOWLEDGE...Know that your instrument is your voice. If it gets sick as in, sore throat, polyps or abusive technique, the vocal chords will stop working. You may develope laryngitus. It's difficult at first, but after ten repeated breath therapy sessions, students show escalated increases in breath retension and control. In my ' VOCAL HATHA ', we will explore different breathing techniques as they apply to the singing voice. POSTURE is another contributing factor in the longevity of singing. Stand infront of a mirror and you will notice that: 1. Your neck and head are protruding forward. 2. Your shoulders are curled or rounded. 3. You're bent slightly forward from the torso or waist. 4. Your derriere sticks out. 5. Your legs are locked. These postural poses may be detrimental to the healthy ethnics of singing. Miss Manners was not far off, when she insisted that little BETTY walk around the room with a book on her head. Balance, poise and body alignment regulate the confident disposition needed for vocalizations. Yoga is excellent for redefining the body and spirit.
