Oscar Picks

It's that time of year again. Along with the approaching spring, the Oscar buzz has started to make its way into our collective lives. While ignoring the inanity of proclaiming one piece of art as the "Best", let's do our best to pick some movies and actors that deserve to be recognized.

Best Actor- Guy Pearce, Memento. A lot of people will choose Russell Crowe for his portrayal of the crazy math guy in The Beautiful Mind, but I personally despise the man, so I hope he doesn't win. Guy Pearce does an amazing job as the moment to moment amnesiac in Memento. His gradual loss of sanity is compelling and its a truly brilliant performance.

Best Actress- Nicole Kidman, The Others- Kidman could win this for Moulin Rouge also, but she is more likely to win for a movie like The Others, a scary, scary feature that made my skin crawl.

Best Costume Design- Moulin Rouge- The easiest pick of the bunch. They shouldn't even bother with other nominations.

Best Director- Wes Anderson- The Royal Tenenbaums From Bottle Rocket to Rushmore to his current brilliance, Wes Anderson is a movie God. No less than Martin Scorsese called him the best director working today. Enough said.

Best Movie- If Black Hawk Down wins this category, i'm leaving. I'm leaning towards The Royal Tenebaums, Wes Anderson's take on the modern family. Well written, brilliant acting, wonderful directing, this movie has it all. Anderson is the premier writer/director of our time. If you haven't seen it yet, i'm leaving.

Best Foreign Movie- Amelie The year's most charming movie should be the year's best movie, but the "Academy" are a bunch of cowards. Amelie will have to settle for Foreign Film.

Best Screenplay (Original)- The Royal Tenenbaums. Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson come up with yet another genius script.

Best Supporting Actor- Billy Bob Thornton, Bandits. Billy Bob is gold.

Best Supporting Actress- Marisa Tomei, My Cousin Vinny....er...In The Bedroom.

That's it. My opinion means nothing, yet I can't help but think it should, it really should.
