Despite his active romantic life, Gustave never married. In fact, he spent his later years caring for his mother and his niece. Financial problems overshadowed his later years, complicating life for the man widely known as a pessimist and a cynic.

Gustave Flaubert died of a cerebral hemorrhage on May 8, 1880, at Croisset.
