Classic Authors: Alfred, Lord Tennyson

Jul 3, 2001 - © Susan Jensen

In 1845, Alfred received a government pension, which helped ease his financial burdens. Not only was he made a baron during this time, but he also produced such skillful pieces as “The Princess” (1847) and In Memoriam(1850). In addition, he was able to marry Emily, with whom he settled at Freshwater, in the Isle of Wight. Together, the couple had two sons, Hallam and Lionel. Alfred doted on the boys; Lionel’s early death at sea devastated his devoted father.

In 1850, Alfred became Poet Laureate of England. He continued to publish poetry, including his epic Idylls of the King(1859).

Alfred, Lord Tennyson died on October 6, 1892, of gout. He passed away peacefully, with his wife and son at his side. His last volume of poetry was published two weeks after his death.
