Classic Authors: L.M. Montgomery

Sep 28, 1999 - © Susan Jensen

Ewen and L.M. had three sons, one stillborn. Although they were her delight, some of their adult decisions distressed and worried her. Ewen also caused her to fret. Throughout the remainder of his life, he experienced disturbing bouts of melancholia, bordering on madness. L.M. suffered her own nervous breakdown in 1940.

After the breakdown, L.M.'s health began to decline. Two years later, on April 24, 1942, she died in Toronto. Ewen followed her, passing away in December of 1942.

L.M. Montgomery left a literary legacy, that has delighted children and adults through the years. In her lifetime, she published over 20 novels, and a large amount of short stories. Thanks to her, Prince Edward Island received incredible publicity, and now welcomes around 300,000 visitors a year.
