This is a short story review of "Busted Blossoms" by Stuart M. Kaminsky. This story is found in Murderous Schemes, which is an anthology of Classic Detective Stories edited by Donald E. Westlake.

Busted Blossoms was an interesting story. Toby Peters, who was a private investigator, was the narrator. He was hired to keep an eye on someone who recently came to town and whose life was being threatened. He had been a movie director, and was washed up. However, he was to help Korites with a movie. Korites was a producer and was planning on producing a movie and having D.W. direct it. After the murder was committed, D.W. went to get Toby Peters.

When D.W. Griffin walked in to where Toby Peters was listening to the radio, he said that a murder had been committed. Peters told Griffin to call the police. Griffin told him that they called the police. They went to Korites' house where they were gathered for a dinner party. The guests were Denise Giles, James Vann, Lew Dollard, and D.W. Griffin. The murder happened during the time they were ready to eat their salads. They hadn't been served the main course.

Toby Peters came along as an associate. However, Marty Korites told Peters that Griffin mentioned he was a detective. When they looked at the corpse, Peters was surprised that a murder was committed with the lights on and nobody saw it happen.

Sikes, the one who was murdered, was a backer. He was going to finance the movie that D. W. was going to direct and Korites was going to produce. However Sikes was in debt and expected to be paid that night.

Later on, Mrs. Windless came into the dining room and asked if they were ready for the roast. Then, she noticed Mr. Sikes and screamed out that he was dead.

Toby Peters knew that someone at the party had murdered Sikes. Now, his job was to question the suspects and hope the police would arrive soon. After awhile, Toby Peters began wondering if the whole murder scene was a practical joke. Was Sikes really murdered, or was he pretending to be? Was this scene a joke on D.W.? Did they plan this while D.W. went to get Peters? Now, it's your job to read the story and find out what happened? Also, what about the title? What is the meaning of Busted Blossoms?

This story was interesting. It was a different type of story than what I have read, but I enjoyed it. The ending is quite intriguing.
