Classic Literature also includes Classic Mysteries. Classic Mysteries include authors like Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Agatha Christy, Edward D. Hoch, Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, Ellery Queen, Erle Stanley Gardner, Dame Ngaio Marsh, Dorothy L. Sayers, and other famous authors that have written stories and novels over the centuries.
For this article, I read "The Christmas Client" by Edward D. Hoch. This is found in the anthology titled "Holmes for The Holidays." This story features two famous characters that are normally found in books and short stories by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. They are Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. In this story, Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson are having Christmas dinner with Mrs. Hudson. They are enjoying their holiday until they have an unexpected visitor. Mrs. Hudson introduces Charles Lutwidge Dodgson to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. They are wondering why he would come and visit them on Christmas Day. Sherlock Holmes thinks he must have some kind of emergency to come on a holiday. Charles L. Dodgson begins telling them why he came that day. He said he was being blackmailed. He told them how he was at the beach and met a young girl. They talked for awhile and wanted to go wading. He pinned up her dress so she wouldn't get it wet while she was wading. What he didn't know was that someone was taking pictures of them. Because of the scene and Charles L. Dodgson's background, his reputation was at stake. He received a poem and showed it to Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. As they read it, they weren't sure what clues they were to perceive from the poem. Within a few minutes, things started to click. They were to go somewhere and be there by 1:00. When they arrived, that's when things start happening, and the suspense starts to build even more. Now, you'll have to read the short story to find out what happened. I highly recommend this short story and book. If you are a fan of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson, you will enjoy reading these stories that are written by other writers. For other short story reviews, feel free to look at my site "Mysteries."
