Race Movies: Three Documentaries

I was able to find all three of these films at the library. If you have a small local library, you still may be able to have them borrowed through interlibrary loan. That's Black Entertainment and Midnight Ramble are also still available on video and easy to find on major websites. Black Shadows may be more difficult to find, but it is worth the effort.

Suggested Websites:

Micheaux Society Website--Sponsored by the Duke University program in film + video, there is so much information here, from film stills to an impressive list of books about blacks in film.

Oscar Micheaux Homepage
Here is a good source for information about the annual Micheaux film festival and lots of facts about the man himself.

The Nina Mae McKinney Website--A very nice site about an actress who made her mark in both Hollywood and independent black cast movies.

I also highly recommend Black Cinema Treasures: Lost and Found, by G. Williams Jones (University of Texas Press)---A fascinating book with interviews, essays, stills and film plots all related to the Tyler, Texas, Black Film Collection-this book is essential for anyone interested in learning more about race films. It makes an excellent companion to the documentaries as clips of many of the films in the book are included in all three.
