1939: A Great Year

Povah, Joan Fontaine, Virginia Weidler, Marjorie Main, Butterfly McQueen

Though the plot focuses on the men in these women's lives, not one appears onscreen throughout this fast-paced, catty, whirlwind of a comedy. Even the horses are female. The cast is a delicious mix of strong stage actresses, rising starlets and some of the most accomplished screen actresses of the thirties.

Wuthering Heights
Directed by: William Wyler
Starring: Merle Oberon, Laurence Olivier, Geraldine Fitzgerald, David Niven, Flora Robson, Donald Crisp

Merle Oberon was never better than when William Wyler directed her. Though her performance drew mixed reviews, her role in this classic is her best remembered. Geraldine Fitzagerald gives a devastating performance as a woman tortured by Heathcliff's (Olivier) rejection. Her decline is sharp, but entirely believable because she shows so clearly how the loss of hope can destroy a woman's life.

Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Though it is a small supporting role, this is one of Ida Lupino's best early performances.

Loretta Young shares the screen with her sisters Sally Blane, Polly Young and Georgiana Belzer.
Made for Each Other
Carole Lombard shows she can play dramatic roles. Louise Beavers is touching as a wise maid.

Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex
Bette Davis shows her diversity in a role worlds away from Dark Victory.
