Terror on the Mississippi: The Sultana Disaster, Part I

this can be explained when considering the events of the previous days.

The Confederate capital at Richmond had just fallen, and it's government was on the run, Lee after failing to unite with Johnson had surrendered at Appomattox, and of course the plot to undo the Federal Government by assassination of it's political leaders, and the subsequent search for the conspirators was going full steam ahead.

So was it any surprise that when the Sultana exploded in such a time of national crisis and chaos, of hysteria and rage, that it didn't attract greater attention?
