Somehow it does not seem appropriate to write yet another article on the history of iconoclasm, or mysticism, or any number of other historical oddities at the moment. I've started several of those articles in the past week, but have not finished them. It seems only fitting in this time, faced with the horror of the recent attack, to ponder the history of hatred, in this case, as it relates to religion.
People of all religions have been guilty of atrocities. Hatred does not discriminate in that regard. The religion of Islam does not support the killing of innocent people, any more than the Catholic church supports acts of terrorism in Ireland. The prophet Muhammad provided rules of combat in war, and the acts of terror on September 11th were in clear violation of those rules. http://www0.mercurycenter.com/premium/na... http://users.erols.com/gmqm/sibai6.html I have heard many comments, both online and in day to day life that have turned my stomach in recent days. I know that much of this prejudice comes from fear and anger, but it is nonetheless prejudice. It is important that we all remember to blame only those responsible for these acts and not the many innocent individuals of all faiths who are simply going about their day to day lives. The terrorists who committed the horrid atrocities in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania are no more representative of Islam than Hitler was of Christianity. Moreover, as evidence is accumulated, and a finger pointed at Osama Bin Laden and Afghanistan, it is also important to say that the Taliban is not representative of Afghanistan and is not supported by the vast majority of the people of Afghanistan. I know that this article has been a bit of a divergence from my normal topic, but I hope that, given the circumstances, no one will object. Hatred is born of ignorance...let us not allow that ignorance or that hatred.
