April '03 Update

Bought Music
  • Cush: anesthetic alternative[4]
  • A Few Loose Screws: punk [3]
  • All Star United: Ska-flavored rock. [4]
  • Steve Camp: Sounds lots like DeGarmo and Key. Arena rock that's not really big hair and spandex, but it's got an '80s sound. [4]
  • The Waiting: I think I've found another sound like PFR and Smalltown Poets! [5]
  • My Friend Stephanie: Alternative with lots of retro-flavorings. [4]
  • Amy Morriss: soft alto voice with a slight, but not irritating warble/slur/breathiness. Beautiful instrumentals, making use of a wide variety of instruments. She's on the edgy side of stereotyped CCM. [4]
  • Glass Harp: WOW! I thought I'd never get to hear Glass Harp, but I actually found a copy in my Hastings store's used-CD bin. Phil Keaggy's first band. It's got flavors of laid back Jethro Tull, Moody Blues and mellow Beatles. I found the CD release of It Makes Me Glad, which was originally released in 1972. [5]
  • Crooked Smile: Another classic sound. Again, the vocals sound a lot like Moody Blues. [4]
  • Selfmindead: Hardcore with screamed/yelled vocals, rather than growled. The vocals are almost understandable without the printed lyrics, and easily understood with them. Except that I give the benefit of doubt when I rate a band, I'd have included them in the un-rated stuff below. I'm really torn here. I think I'd rather listen to Kathy Troccoli, whom I put below, but Selfmindead is rock and Kathy's not. Unlike Pillar, which grew on me the more I listened, Selfmindead is more and more a struggle to survive a whole CD. [1-3]

Twos and Lower

Jack Jezzro--instrumental elevator/muzac/jazz; KJ-52--Rap, not so much angry, as sneering rap; Keith Green--light, (much non-rock MOR) but very stereotypical of AC; Kathy Troccoli--Cher-like vocals set to MOR/elevator music -pleasant, clear voice.
