The Chaffers/Waterdeephe searched. Lori messed something up while singing and she inserted an extra note in the melody and sang "sorry" with a smile. The two of them started a song and exchanged grins, then laughter, and started over. I don't know what went wrong either time. Even the story of their second-hand Wurlitzer was fun. Lori said it was a $50 instrument, but worth thousands to the naive and gullible --even with its broke sustain pedal. Their songs are lyrically dark I suppose. They sing of love lost, death and dying, spiritual searching and the frustrations of self-doubt among other things. I sort of wondered at the cover of a Hendrix tune (by Bob Dylan) they did ("All Along the Watchtower"). I wanted to compare lyrics to see what they changed, if anything. Until that night, I'd only heard one of their CDs (Everyone's Beautiful). The sounds didn't surprise me, or disappoint in the least. Now I can say I'd heard Don and Lori in concert, and I've got another CD in my collection. I wish I could have afforded all of them. Waterdeep, and Don and Lori Chaffer, are on my watch list for future concerts. They should be on yours, too. And whether Waterdeep is playing of not, check out the New Earth Coffeehouse. I know I'll be back.
