The Coffeehouse: Pt. 1

How does one start a coffeehouse? I've been invited to arrange for the music at a new Christian coffeehouse at my church. This coffeehouse will cater mainly to our youth. In this article series, we'll go through my learning (hopefully) of the sound system and operation of the 32 channel mixer, along with other experiences. This is an as-it-happens article from First Baptist Church of Warrensburg, Missouri.

My first task was to find some bands who'd be willing to play. I had to let them know that I didn't know our finances, and several responded that they would still play despite the financial risk. Of course, the bands wanted to work us into their schedule, but our scheduling wasn't firm yet. I couldn't give them any dates, so things came to a standstill. At least I know bands can be found. Let's hope they'll respond when I can get 'em dates. Though it's not music, another opportunity presented itself, so I proposed the showing of the Left Behind, World at War movie for a movie night.

In the meantime, the sound guys had been showing me how to operate the sound system. I needed to get acquainted with the equipment so I could give a band a better idea of what we had than, "There's this thingy with a bunch of switches and slides controls on it and lots of cords running out of it. Oh yeah, and we've got big speakers, too --and a computer and a CD player that looks like it does lots more than just play CDs." I've been hanging out in the sound booth for several consecutive Wednesday Youth-Group nights. On one of them, I was the only sound guy to show. (No, that doesn't mean the rest of the guys were unsound.) With only minimal help, mostly answers of "yes" to my questions, I was able to work the sound. Most everything was all set for me. The basics are to know which slide controls the volume for which piece of equipment. I didn't have to mess with the gain controls or other finer adjustment stuff.

A couple more nights, and I was comfortable with at least the volume and mute controls. Slow as I might be, I'm learning to respond to requests from the stage. Along with that new-coming confidence, I was given the news that I could begin setting up entertainment as I saw fit. In other words, we finally got dates. Of course, those dates couldn't conflict with major school or church events, and one of the moms, who also volunteers behind the coffee-counter, gave me a school calendar, complete with some don't-schedule dates. I was off and running.
