January, '05 Update

I guess I was saving money for gifts, rather than spending it on the CD collection. Anyway, I don't have much new stuff to review. I found one at the library, and ordered my first "Christmas" CD. I did buy a new toy, instead of lots of CDs.

We visited friends over New Year's Eve/Day, like we usually do. They had a new IPOD, and were showing all it could do. I saw that it had quite a bit of potential, but one little feature stood out for me. He could play from his IPOD into a radio. That would sure beat listening to my CD player with headphones while driving my library delivery van. I told my son about it when we got home, and he said they make CD players that do that. So, I went to Wal-Mart the next day to get me one of those fancy players. I didn't find one, but I did find a neat little gadget that plugs into the headphone jack and transmits to the radio. I got one, and tried it out in the van. It was great! If you listen to a portable CD player a lot, but don't have players in your vehicle, I highly recommend one of those little FM transmitters! OK, on with the music.

Not Yet in the Collection
  • Everyday Sunday: Modern rock or power pop. Their style is quite variable, from folk to beatlesesque to almost rapcore. The vocal is quite similar to Switchfoot, and sometimes like Big Tent Revival. Everyday Sunday could fit in with the PFR/Believeable Picnic group. I had a bit of difficulty with the lyrics, since they were in yellow hand-written-style print over photography. The vocals were slightly slurred, and a bit sandy. [4]

  • Julie Miller: Blend of country, folk and acoustic rock. Julie's got a child-like voice --almost such as could be used for a little-girl cartoon character. [3]

From the Collection
  • WOW Christmas I got this one for one song: Audio Adrenaline's Little Drummer Boy. There is lots of good stuff on that Christmas CD! Third Day does a good Do You Hear What I Hear?, and Jennifer Knapp's Sing Mary Sing and Sixpence None the Richer's Christmastime is Here are some good new Christmas songs. There are a few artists which distort the originals so you can't sing along, but, for the most part, it's a good CD.
Just for the Record
  • Bruce Carroll: He looked like he could be a blues-rocker on the CD cover. He turned out to be softish Southern Gospel. His style doesn't fall within my preferred listening area.
