I'm not really sure what drives how I do a review. Lots of artists get reviews in the monthly updates, while some receive special, more in-depth reviews. No matter what the motivation, here are two more artists deserving of that extra text (would that be textra?). OK, I know, leave the humor attempts to Daniel Ellsworth and John L. Hoh, Jr.
- I hadn't heard of either artist until just a couple months back. Richard Andrew asked if I could do a review of his music. I said I could, so he sent me a CD. I'd read that Richard had been in a punk band, then that he plays an acoustic style. I wondered, as I awaited the CD, what acoustic punk might sound like.
The CD came in the mail, and it, of course, wasn't acoustic punk, but a relaxing, appealing acoustic rock. His singing is reminiscent of Mac Powell of Third Day. Even his niece, Marina, said, "Uncle Rich, you sound like Third Day." Richard beautifully wove lots of Scripture into the songs. To sit back and listen to the CD, while reading along with the lyrics, particularly after having read his testimony, brings "Jesus bumps", and almost brought tears. If you're on the edge of being saved, but haven't taken that last step, God's Word, as presented by Richard Andrew, could just bump you over that edge. - Trisha Eros responded so happily to an e-mail I sent her, complimenting her on her sound, that I figured I oughtta write more on her. Trisha Eros is one of my CD Baby discoveries. After I listened to some sound clips, I e-mailed her and said I liked what I heard, and that I was going to order a copy of the CD soon. She e-mailed a thank-you. I received the CD, and listened to it, and e-mailed her again, and got a bit wordy. She replied with a long e-mail, as though we'd always been family. Technically, we are --both adopted to the same Family! Anyway, I think that's fun when artists take time to respond to listeners.
Imagine Karen Carpenter, doing more upbeat rock and playing with some almost-heavy blues and rock, rather than her soft-and-sleepy piano-backed middle-of-the-road stuff. That's a great voice and great music combination, and that's also what you get with Trisha Eros' Season of Life CD. You also get to hear her two-year-old daughter, Olivia sing some rhythm vocals on "Sad".
