More Hotdogs, Anyone?

Back in September, 03, the Hot Dogs for Jesus (HD4J) ministry made their debut on this topic to close out that monthly Update. This time, they're the feature.

In May and early in June, I had an idea for something like a "Hot August Music" article, featuring music with a fire-theme. I got quite a few fire-songs in my head, but that might have to wait until next August. I did, however, go to another concert where the HD4J ministry played a big part. It's also been an interesting experience for me to try to arrange for their up-coming 16 October concert in my home town of Warrensburg, Missouri. In June, HD4J ministered at Currentfest '04.

I'd have eagerly gone to Currentfest last year, but we bought tickets to Crossover before hearing of that much-closer (Clinton, Missouri), outdoor, free Christian music concert. This year's Crossover only features one band which appeals to my taste: that'd be Superchic[k]. This year, I made it to Currentfest --or at least to the first part of it.

I knew, before starting, that we were going to have to leave early. I got to hear one of the bands I came for, and got to hear two new ones.

About the artists:

  • Stan Pollmann: Nice bluesy tone, then got a bit close to the mushy side. Folk flavored drum-free blues rock. Stan's vocals reminded me of Willie Nelson, but he reminded my son of Johnny Cash. Stan Pollmann is from Blue Springs, MO.

  • By Grace: This was a praise and worship group from different local churches. Churches ought to get together more often for this sort of fellowship!

  • Overflow: Wow! I liked these guys the first time I heard 'em, and their sound's been nicely fine-tuned. Rob, Michael, and Jimmy, your new drummer, Brandon, will work out just fine! They've got a really alive alternative with emo-flavorings sound. Overflow is from Ozark, MO.

  • Bar Judah: Read about Bar Judah in the September, '03 article, and in the July '04 Update. I didn't get to hear 'em live this time, but I managed to get hold of a CD.

  • Empty Tomb and Inner Flame: These guys really show enthusiasm in their ministry. I missed 'em this time, but I've heard 'em enough that I consider them friends, and not just another Christian band (well, that goes for Overflow, too). Just type the names into the search field here, to read about their sounds. These Hot Dogs for Jesus bands really give meaning to the family aspect of Christianity.

I went to Thelma's Dog's place at KC Christian music (see links page), and found other artists, as well. Thelma's Dog sounds like it'll be another one to add to my favorites-list.
