Al GreeneLegendary soul singer Al Green is known for singing his heart out and served his musical apprenticeship in the Greene Brothers, a fraternal gospel quartet. The Arkansas-born soul singer, 64, says down the line from his Memphis home, referring to the late-'50s-early '60s sounds of Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke. who bought a church in Memphis and had become an ordained pastor of the Full Gospel Tabernacle. He is known as "the quintessential soul man" and the Godfather of Soul and made his first recordings in 1960. Green has successfully earned five Grammys, including a reunion with Mitchell in 1985. Al Green's been charging the music industry of his listeners with his gospel-edged Southern soul for nearly 30 years. His musical sound is best described as a sinewy, sexy groove highlighted by horn punctuations and string beds. Green sings straight-from-the-heart and has a soulful and impassioned voice which is clearly demonstrated in his albums. His voice which is prone to a gorgeous falsetto is on a par with Otis Redding and Sam Cooke. He is accompanied by his nine-piece band and four backup singers. Al Green's own story, titled "Take Me To The River," hit bookshelves Sept. 12. At the same time, The Right Stuff/EMI will issue a double-CD, 30-track career restrospective, also dubbed "Take Me To The River." The collection includes "Let's Stay Together (the first song to bring the audience to its feet)," "I'm Still In Love With You," and "You Ought To Be With Me," as well as live cuts of "God Blessed Our Love" and "For The Good Times."
