We Are One

Walt Whitman and the Soul Children of Chicago are helping to establish a heritage of musicianship for gospel artists in the Windy City. Whitman formed the 75 voice Soul Children of Chicago (who's ages range from seven to seventeen) in October 1981. They sing a variety of high-powered, energetic music including classical, gospel, Negro Spirituals, anthems and hymns. The fact that the Soul Children can show so much vocal maturity as a choir comprised of mainly youngsters is a significant testimonial to the level of discipline that Walt Whitman maintains in his choral ensemble. That's one of the reasons why the Soul Children are so good, because they are so absolutely at home singing all their songs, even though the stylistic diversity in their repertoire is considerable. Often referred to as Chicago's "Goodwill Ambassadors," the choir has recorded four critically acclaimed albums "We Are One," "This Is The Day," "Live and Blessed" and the Stellar Award winning CD "Growing Up".

Their latest album, "We are One" is nothing short of magnificent. "We Are One," written by Peter Scholtes, Walt Whitman and Kim McFarland, combines the message of the Christian folk song "They'll Know we are Christians by our Love" with classic modern gospel ensemble styling. Beginning with a lovely piano introduction, then a male-female duet, the performance builds in intensity with a female solo vocalist (Kim McFarland?) weaving her melismatic magic with the high-energy chorus and jazzy instrumentation. The nine tracks that comprise the album are some of the most eclectic songs that I've ever heard by one group on one recording. Each song vibrantly shines with stellar instrumentation and rich vocal color. Other notable songs on the album include "27th Psalm", "Thank You Jesus, and "Anything you want". Each song shakes the soul.

When you put it all together, the music of the Soul Children demonstrates the richness of the Christian walk. Sometimes it's happy and full of joy, and sometimes it's aober and solemn. Sometimes you have to put on the whole armor and fight, and sometimes you just have to lay back and experience the presence of God. But whatever the situation, we must always let His praise continually be in our mouths. That's the vision that Walt Whitman has established with this fine recording.
