Rodney Posey & PraiseEl Shaddai is Rodney Posey's second album for Crystal Rose and his first using his own 12-voice vocal ensemble choir. El Shaddai is gospel music with praise-filled song stylings. Posey demonstrates that his gift for straight out praise has increased, and he provides solid, well-tempered and tightly-knit vocals all the way through. His choir is dominated by rich tenors and sopranos. The terrific title song, "El Shaddai" which opens the album encompasses a snappy, funky, and pop-soul rhythm. The following nine songs provide a steady pace and mix contemplative pieces like "Lord I Worship" and "Great Is the Lord" with uptempo songs such as "I Will Rejoice" and "Put Yo' Hands Up." The most intriguing tune on the CD, "Wailing To Dancin'," is a successful jam with a a Latin percussion and horn arrangement which gives it a calpyso beat and sound. However, most of the other tracks on the project are more praise and worship with a steady flow. Additionally, Fred Hammond makes his contributions to the project not just as musician (keys, bass, drum programming) and producer, but also as co-songwriter with Kim Rutherford on three cuts. As a result, Hammond sensitively renders a sound appropriate to Posey's style with Praise backing Posey's soaring lead vocals throughout. A case in point is "My Father", which is a clear ballad with fresh lyrics: "Like a child, I can run to Him, Daddy loves me, my Father cares for me." But Hammond also takes Posey to the other side of soft, with "I Will Rejoice", which has a funkier sound. El Shaddai offers a refreshing combination of awesome praise jams, lyrics and ballads.
