The Philadelphia Mass Choir and its parent organization, The Gospel Music Workshop of America, came into existance together and have brought peace and joy to many.. In fact, the Mass Choir was the initial chapter of what is now a national organization.
The Philadelphia Mass Choir became the first choir established under the Gospel Music Workshop of America. The Philadelphia Mass Choir has become pioneers for mass choirs all over the country under the direction of James Ford and Freeman Wilson. Through ministering in song throughout the United States and abroad, they have become a renown voice in Gospel Music. In 1986, they were appointed "Good Will Ambassadors" for Philadelphia. The Philadelphia Mass Choir has released nine(9) recordings. In 1987, the Stellar Awards nominated their release, "Everything Has Worked Out Alright" Best Album of the Year. In 1989, their recording "Never Gonna Give Up" was awarded Best Gospel Recording by the Philadelphia Music Foundation. Also in 1989, they received the nomination for the Best Recording by the GMWA Excellence Awards. In 1996, the Philadelphia Mass Choir recorded their current release, "Miracles", which was recorded on the Higher Ground record label and produced by Garland Miche` Waller. The Philadelphia Mass Choir remains an active force in the GMWA. GMWA Mass Choir captured all of the excitement and spirit of the Gospel Music Workshop of America held in Cincinnati, Ohio. 2,000 voices united to celebrate a 30 year legacy. They gracefully deliver another soulful, melodic and spirit-filled project, one that is sprinkled with flavors of blues, has jazz undertones, and is mixed with a traditional old school church sound. GMWA Mass will definitely take you back to church! 30 YEARS IN THE SPIRIT will be a breath of fresh air for all gospel music lovers and a must add to their collection. The choir has been blessed with a talented staff of musicians, directors, and writers. We are always thankful to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, for the gift of music that he has bestowed upon us. We count it all as joy to serve the Lord. History Rev. James Cleveland called together musicians, gospel artists and religious leaders from across this country to form what is now known as the Gospel Music Workshop of America, Inc in 1968. Mr. James Ford was appointed to represent Philadelphia on the National Board of Directors. The Philadelphia Mass Choir became the first choir established under GMWA, and Rev. Freeman Wilson was appointed the Chapter Representative. The first Annual Convention of the Gospel Music Workshop was held in Detroit, Michigan in 1968 at the King Solomon Baptist Church. The Philadelphia Chapter of the Gospel Music Workshop of America remains an active force in the convention and at the 1995 National Convention received the award for one of the greatest chapters of GMWA.
