David/Asaph Project: PsalmodyPsalmody Links
Dano: What does the title track Psalmody mean? David: Psalmody refers to placing music to the Psalms. It has several other meanings that are closely related, such as arranging music for the purpose of singing of the Psalms, a collection of Psalms, and the singing of Psalms in worship. Dano: What is the David/Asaph Project? David: The project consists of all of the people who were involved in the recording and production of the Psalmody CD. We chose the names David and Asaph because both names commemorate the two most prolific authors of the biblical Psalms: King David and the outstanding musician Asaph. Dano: What gave you the idea to compose music to the Psalms and when did you begin? David: I was strumming chords on the guitar one day and looked at the Bible, which was opened to the book of the Psalms. The idea then occurred to me to place music to the Psalms. This happened in 1988. During my childhood, my church regularly sang a song which had music placed to Psalm 100. The memory of this song may have helped spawn the idea to try placing music to other Psalms. The first song attempted was for portions of Psalm 46. To my astonishment the melody developed quickly. This was the first song I had ever successfully composed in my life. The true test was waiting until the next day to see if I could remember the melody. The next day proved that the melody was memorable and I knew something very significant had changed in my life.
