A Reporter Tries to find U2’s Dirty Laundry

Isn't it frustrating when rock stars don't live sordid, morally reprehensible lives? Entertainment journalist Jaan Uhelszki reported recently that U2 has an alarmingly low gossip value. Nothing violent, unfaithful, promiscuous, or scandalous here. First, Uhelszki was disappointed to find that Adam Clayton and Bono had slipped out of participating in an Austrailian gay pride celebration. Second, Uhelszki broke the shocking news that, although Bono has been seen chatting with supermodels, "he remains true blue to Ali [his wife], the mother of his three children." OH MY GOODNESS!! The only bizarre behavior the reporter observed was a 1 p.m. wake-up call. The band's manager confessed "I try to channel their maximum energy level to coincide with the show at 8:15 p.m., and that means a late wake up on concert days." Before each show, Bono enjoys a long shower and a massage. Looks like the U2 boys have really sold out to the lives of well-adjusted, conscience-bearing individuals! What are they doing in rock'n'roll?

Vintage U2 songs also point to Jesus as our true hope, and the kingdom of God as the only place of true satisfaction. (Check out the lyrics to Gone, Wake Up Dead Man, and If God Will Send His Angels on the Pop album to see what I mean.)

Kirk Franklin, who helped revitalize gospel music on the charts with last year's (1997) phenomenon "God's Property," will welcome the vocals of U2 frontman Bono on his next project, says MJI Broadcasting. The album, an r&b/gospel project, is said to be a Franklin solo recording. Bono and the U2 boys did their part in bringing gospel into the spotlight in the late '80's when they recorded a gospel-choir version of I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For.

I was reading a recent article in a magazine the other day (I think it was Time) about U2's recent appearance on The Simpsons. I wish I saw this one! Well, Bono wasn't really happy with the cartoonist's rendition of his caricature . . . Bono was hare-lipped with no chin! Bono jokingly said "We know where they park their cars."
