Tourniquet's Crawl to China

First off, for those not familiar with Tourniquet, they are a Christian heavy metal band that has been spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ to this generation with their unique sound since the early 90's. Their newest album has something for everyone. All of the songs on here are of most excellent quality in each of the categories that they fit in, from the soft ballad and delicate acoustic arrangements, to the very loud and sometimes abrasive metal tuneage that they are well know for. Tourniquet has shown on this CD that they can be diverse and still do it with class and style — in my opinion, probably more so than any other band.

The first song, "Claustrospelunker," opens up with a real jazz, swing-time, finger-snapping style, then morphs into hard rock with the crunching guitars and killer vocals.

The second tune, "Crawl to China" is the title track and is in the style that I always associate Tourniquet with — distorted guitars and screaming vocals, along the thrash metal way that I enjoyed since I bought their first album Stop the Bleeding back in around 1991.

The third number, "Enveloped in Python," is another original thrash metal number with excellent bass riffs that they purposely put together the worst guitar sounds they could possibly get, including out of tune guitars, practice amp and the midrange cranked.

The fifth melody is a tender ballad that will minister to all. "If I was There" has the natural sound of an acoustic guitar, with all the pick tapping and finger sliding sounds. The vocal harmonies by Luke are soothing and minister to the soul. This sounds more like the old band Seals & Crofts than it sounds like Tourniquet. It is truly a refreshing experience to hear this and just meditate on the goodness of our Lord Jesus Christ.

There is a number called "Bats" that drifts from a 60's sort of style with a nice acoustic beat that is replaced by some cool bass riffs and arrangements on the chorus lines. This song has a good message along with a catchy beat, and it's just the title that may make it look like it isn't what it is.

"If Pigs Could Fly" asks the question why doesn't God move when we want Him to. This one borders on the hard rock then leans to metal that Tourniquet is popular for.

This album is definitely a must-have for any Tourniquet fan or for those who are in the Chistian metal scene.
