As winter approaches, "the least of these" need our care.Who suffers most when times are tough? The children usually must do without basic necessities unless compassionate Christians step in. Read the following story of how God's people, again, "stood in the gap" for the helpless. The Republic of Moldova is passing through a transitional period to market economy. Because of this transition, the country currently faces many social and economic problems. This economic crisis has impacted on lives of people in the most vulnerable levels of society, especially the lives of the children in orphanages. The living conditions in the boarding schools and orphanages are sub-standard at best and sometimes just disastrous. The funds provided by the state budget cannot ensure the least basic necessities of food and clothing for the children. These children lack basic foods such as: sugar, salt, potatoes, oil, butter, onions, meat. At times the only supplies for these children was one sack of flour. When the Mission Without Borders Field Staff visited the Sculeni Orphanage, the Director told them that all their food was depleted. The delivery of potatoes from MWB came just in time. Because potatoes are cheaper and of better quality in Romania, Child Rescue International purchased forty tons of potatoes from Romania to deliver them to the boarding schools in Moldova. The majority of the schools did their best to make some supplies of food from the autumn harvest last but these reserves were all consumed before the new year. Now these orphanages faced famine and despair. The potatoes were stored at the Child Rescue International (CRI, a ministry of Mission Without Borders) warehouse and in January the potato deliveries began. CRI also purchased six tons of sunflower oil from the local producers and began to deliver it with the potatoes. The MWB deliveries were a real reason of joy both for the Director and the children. The Directors often confessed that the deliveries were a life-saver for them. One of the Directors, who has been an atheist his entire life, confessed that he could not deny the existence of God. He had seen with his own eyes a super natural force guiding us to bring them aid, just when they needed it the most, when they were about to give up any hope. These potatoes are of the highest quality. The Directors said that they had not seen such potatoes since the better days of the orphanages. They taste good and are easy to peel. The oil and the potatoes are the basic ingredients for the majority of meals prepared at orphanages, so the children will not suffer from hunger at least until spring.
