Bulgaria -Children's Camp 1999The camp organized by Mission Without Borders was held in a beautiful village in the mountain called Stara Planina. This place is hidden in a marvelously natural mountain environment which drew the attention of all of the camp participants. The 70 children, between 7 and 18 years of age, from three orphanages in Bulgaria attended the camp together with several mentors from these orphanages. The leadership and the presentation of the camp were done with the help of Child Evangelism in Bulgaria. Divided into age groups, the children learned about Apostle Peter and about Joseph. This program was especially designed for them. Each group had its leaders who were able to pay attention to each individual child. The lessons were aimed not only at teaching but also at communicating and discussing the message. Along with instructing, the program was encompassing lots of surprises and fun times. The games were a special opportunity for fun and competitions. The sports, conducted in teams, were a favorite time for learning new and interesting games. There were special prizes prepared for the participants and winners. The search for hidden treasure attracted all of the adventurers. The trips to the mountain were a good opportunity for play and rest. One of the unique bus trips was to a famous historical place called Shipka Memorial. It is situated on one of the mountain tops and is a significant landmark for the Bulgarian people. The pictures taken there were a valuable memory for the young explorers of nature and history. Various crafts created a time of fun and encouraged the imagination and creativity in both the individual and the work groups. Diverse materials had been prepared in order to provide the children with as many creative art forms as possible . A special time was set apart for learning and singing new songs. Even those who were normally reluctant to join in to group activities could not remain indifferent at the songfests. There was a discotheque for the older children which provided one of their special times of the day. The food was prepared with great care. Everything was cooked deliciously. There was an afternoon repast prepared together with sweets and chocolates; even as the pool in the building was filled and prepared for the young swimmers. Dr. Boneva, who is on the MWB staff for Bulgaria, organized the necessary medical help. Her advice and assistance proved extremely invaluable. Due to the combination of well-organized study time, rest, fun, founding of new friendships and bonding between children there were many tears of sorrow on the last day of camp. No one wanted to leave. The children's interviews show their understanding of the message of the lessons and also their appreciation of the organization and wonderful time they experienced, which all of them are going to greatly miss.
