If you are the parent of a teenager, you will eventually address the subject of redecorating their childhood room.

Designing a Teen Bedroom

If you want to change the color of the walls, it helps to first choose your bedding and window treatments. Catalogs, home stores, and department stores like K-Mart , Wal-Mart, Sears or JCPenney stock a huge variety of bedding sets at reasonable prices.

An example of a stylish teen bedroom is shown at Better Homes and Gardens' Tasteful Teens. Remember that bold, solid colors are easier to live with than patterns, as you can change the accessories easily. However, if you find a pattern, stripe or plaid that appeals to you, go for it! The better the quality, the longer the bedding will last – even through college and into a first apartment.

Choosing a Paint Color

Select one or two of the colors in the bedding that are not too dark, and take a pillowcase with you to the paint store. You'll be able to hold paint sample cards up to it to see if they coordinate with the bedding. Now buy a pint of paint in that color. Don't forget the molding: in the "Tasteful Teens" room shown in the link above, the molding is painted white to contrast with the walls.

At home, paint a piece of cardboard, plywood or Styrofoam project board with the color you bought. Place this against the wall and imagine living with it for a long time. See how it looks in daylight and in lamplight. If you love it, buy enough (probably one gallon for a 10x12 room) to paint the entire room.

Including Space for Friends in a Teen's Bedroom

Teens with larger bedrooms may want to designate part of their space as a hang-out area. Here are some tips on how to create a fun, relaxing zone:

  • Posters, a bulletin board, a shelf or two will make the space cozy and useful.
  • Indoor/Outdoor carpet is easy to clean and can be purchased inexpensively if you don't have a rug already available.
  • A low coffee table, surrounded by floor cushions, makes a game table, snack table and "meeting" location. Bean bag chairs are also fun!
  • Don't forget the CD player/radio/stereo, even a small TV.
  • Milk crates can store CDs, videos, and games to keep the place neat.
