Following successful completion of the college programme, post-graduate clinical training is required. In some colleges this is concurrent in the last 2 years (extending the day to 12 or more hours). Following the meeting of standardized clinical requirements, a series of licensing examinations take place for the jurisdiction in which one is planning to practice.
There are a number of post-graduate specializations available in the areas of orthopedics, radiology, sports chiropractic, rehabilitation, and chiropractic services. It is well established that in all pre-clinical subjects, chiropractic undergraduate training is equivalent to medical training; in fact, in many US states chiropractors and MDs write the same basic science exams for state licensure. CHIROPRACTIC AND THE GOVERNMENT It is commonly accepted that when governments have to make an important decision and generally don't know what to do, they hold an enquiry. Government enquiries are long, and expensive, but they serve to collect the latest knowledge and ascertain the state and condition of whatever question is before them. To me, it speaks volumes that there have been 8 formal government enquiries worldwide into the chiropractic profession in the past 28 years. All of these august bodies reported several common findings. 1. They found chiropractic health care to be safe, effective, efficient in what it does, and cost-effective for its results. 2. They recommended complete licensure in their jurisdiction, recommended government funding in their respective national health care programmes. 3. They criticized the level of antagonism, which exists between chiropractic and medical care as being due to misinformation, prejudice and antipathy. 4. They called for complete interprofessional cooperation in order to better to serve the public. Chiropractic health care is funded partially or fully in many national health plans. The United States, Canada, Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Israel and Australia offer at least some of their citizens coverage for chiropractic treatments. Workers compensation coverage is available for injured workers to seek chiropractic care in the US, Canada and Australia. Private insurance coverage for chiropractic visits is a standard feature in business, government and industry. The chiropractic profession is growing and becoming more established with every passing year. The profession is now considered by many to be part of the mainstream of health care and no longer "an alternative therapy". Indeed, to thousands of people, chiropractic is both a necessary and indispensable part of their lives. Adapted from The Chiropractic Report March 1997 Vol.11 No.2 Go To Page: 1 2
