Re-reading Myths and Fables: Donna Jo Napoli

For this disillusioned fairy tale lover, Donna Jo Napoli's novels are always engaging and provocative. She writes lighter fantasies (Prince of the Pond: Otherwise Known as De Fawg Pin) and historical re-writings as well (Song of the Magdalene; Breath), but themes of loss and redemption are common to most of her darker reworkings of popular tales. The traditional villains are seldom 'evil' or 'bad.' They are foolish, tragic; but never unsympathetic. Napoli's books are strongly recommended to any reader who appreciates depth and authenticity in young adult fiction.
