One of the important tasks a new writer must do is to read, read, read, Study the award winning books, what made these books winners? There are many genres from picture books to nonfiction so spend some time this summer or take some books with you on vacation and take them apart word by word to unravel just what made them so good.
Many thanks to the American Library Association for promoting children's literacy with these awards. Please check their website for even more information. Avi ws the Newbery Award winner for 2003. His book "Crispin: The Cross of Lead" published by Hyperion Books for Children takes place in 14th century England. It is a action-packed tale of murder, mayhem and mystery. Avi is already a popular children's writer with an impressive body of work behind him. Please visit his website to learn more about this prolific author for children. Five Newbery Honor Books were also selected: "The House of Scorpion" by Nancy Farmer "Pictures of Hollis Woods" by Patricia Reilly Giff "Hoot" by Carl Hiaasen "A Corner of the Universe" by Ann M. Martin Nikki Grimes the author of "Bronx Masquerade", was the Coretta Scott King Award winner for 2003.This book, published by Dial Books is an action-packed novel featuring the experiences of 18 urban youths who share their feelings in poetry presentations. The book is titled after the Bronx high school where the presentations took place. The Michael L. Printz Award was presented to already well-known author, Aidan chambers. His novel, "Postcards from No Man's Land", published by Dutton Book is a novel about a 17 year-old who comes to live in Amsterdam searching for the grave of his grandfather who died there during World War II. The mature theme is appropriate for older readers. Three Printz Honor Books were also awarded to, Jack Gantos for his autobiography, "Hole In My Life", Garret Freymann-Weyr for "My Heartbeat" and to Nancy Farmer for "House of the Scorpion". The coveted award for non-fiction, the Robert J. Sibert Award was presented to popular author, James Cross Giblin for his book "The Life and Death of Adolf Hitler" published by Clarion Books. Giblin's work on Hitler provides a window into what type of person could plan and carry out the horrendous deeds that he did. The Margaret A. Edwards Award is presented to an author for lifetime contributions to young adult literature. This was presented to Nancy Gardner. In addition to "The House of the Scorpion" Gardner has also written "Annie on My Mind". Go To Page: 1 2
