Dog of Discover: A Newfoundland's Adventures with Lewis & Clark by Laurence Pringle A ship building delay in Pittsburgh was the reason behind famous explorer, Meriwether Lewis's purchase of a Newfoundland dog. He named his dog Seaman. Seaman would become the faithful companion of the Corps of Discovery as they explored the western territories of the United States. Pringle uses Lewis and Clark's journal entries to highlight Seaman's adventures with the men. Excerpts from the journal are found throughout the book along with side bars, maps, illustrations and art from the original journals. "On June 27 Lewis wrote, "my dog seems to be in a constant state of alarm with these bears and keeps barking all night." Readers will enjoy reading this fascinating and unique look at this great story of exploration and the antics of this famous dog. End notes include actual entries about Seaman in the journals, bibliography and further reading and an index.
