2002 Children's Literature Award Winners Part II

The Robert F. Sibert Award is presented for the best informational book published for children each year. Bound to Stay Bound Books, Inc. sponsors the award that honors Robert Sibert who was known for establishing standards for book binding. The 2002 winner is Susan Campbell Bartoletti, author of "Black Potatoes: The Story of the Great Irishh Famine (1845-1850). Bartoletti is a former English teacher from Moscow, Pa. and has also written, "Kids On Strike" and "Growing Up in Coal Country".

Three Sibert Honor Books were "Surviving Hitler" (HarperCollins). "Vincent van Gogh:Portrait of an Artist" by Jan Greenberg and Sandra Jordan (Delacorte Press). "Brooklyn Bridge" written by Lynn Curlee.

The Pura Belpre Award is given yearly to honor Latino authors and illustrators whose work is the best portrayal and affirmation of the celebration of the Latino cultural experience in a children's book. This years winner is author Pam Munoz Ryan for "Esperanza Rising". Munoz is a former teacher from California and is of Mexican heritage.

Author Award Honor Books were presented to Francisco X. Alarcon for "Iguanas in the Snow". Author Francisco Jimenez won for his book "Breaking Through".

Every year the Association for Library Services for Children announces a list of Notable Children's Books. These selected books include fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and picture books. The Notable Books must be of special interest, quality, creativity, and value to children from preschool to age fourteen. Some of the Notable Books are:
