Children's Lit Awards

There are many awards given annually to the best in children's literature. While I won't cover every one, I'll review some of the most influential.

The 1998 Coretta Scott King Awards, which honors outstanding African-American authors and illustrators, was awarded to author Sharon M. Draper, for her young adult novel Forged by Fire. Javaka Steptoe (son of the late Caldecott Honor artist, John Steptoe) received the award for his first picture book In Daddy's Arms I Am Tall, a beautifully illustrated series of poems on fatherhood.

The winner of the 1998 Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal was Russel Freedman. This medal is awarded by the Association for Library Service for Children and is presented to the author or illustrator whose books have been published in the United States and have made a substantial and lasting contribution to children's literature. Freedman's book Lincoln, A Photobiography, won the 1988 Newbery Medal.

The Golden Kite Award is presented annually by the Society of Children's Writers and Illustrators. The award is given for excellence in the field of children's books. This award is the only award presented to children's book authors and artists by their colleagues. Three Golden Kite awards, one for fiction, one for non-fiction and one for picture illustration, are awarded each year to the most outstanding children's books published that year having been written or illustrated by members of the Society of Children's Writers and Illustrators.

The works chosen are those deemed by the judges to exhibit excellence in writing and illustration. This years recipients for works published in 1997 were:

Fiction:

Desire Lines, Ganto
Hello, I Lied, Kerr
Kinship, Krisher
Seedfolks, Paul Fleischman
Stones In Water, Napoli
Tenderness, Robert Cormier

Mother Jones: Fierce Fighter for Workers' Rights

If I Only Had a Horn: Young Louis Armstrong

My Life With the Wave

Next week's column will continue with some lesser known, but no less important, children's literature awards.
