The World of E Pubbing

E pubbing (electronic publishing) seemed to be the next revolution to hit the world of children's publishing. The fact is that most publishers have developed a wait and see attitude. Publishers such as Farrar, Straus and Giroux have embraced e-pubbing and became the first publishers to produce an e-book for young adults by the end of this year. Simon and Schuster plans to have a list of children's e-books by the end of this year also. What does all this mean to the children's author? A writer needs to be informed, whether writing for children or another market. This new and emerging market needs to be studied and examined just like any other market. Learning the language of this new market place is a good place to begin.

E-BOOKS: Electronic versions of books brought to the consumer in a digital format. These e-books can be downloaded into a PC or a hand held device, such as a Rocket book.

PRINT-ON-DEMAND: This is a new publishing method which allows books to be printed one at a time or on demand. This is a cost efficient method because it lets publishers not be tied to the traditional print run of several thousand books at a time. The drawback is that this technology is very costly. This method still involves the use of paper and although it is a very hot means right now it should probably be viewed as a transitional step until consumers become more comfortable with electronic reading software and e-book reading devices.

DIGITAL CONTENT: This is the electronic delivery method of fiction which is shorter than book-length, non-fiction and documents. This digital content is available to consumers by downloading to handheld or wireless devices. Adobe, PDF, XML and HDML is used for delivery of this information. The wireless content market is huge and will only get larger as more people become accustomed to this type of media.

E-MAIL publishing: If you are a writer thinking about publishing a group's newsletter this is the method of delivery. This is a popular way to attract new readers and inform your fans about new books or upcoming lectures or appearances.

WEB PUBLISHING: Any writer should now have their own website. This can be used to inform readers and editors of your resume and samples of your writing, etc. A personal website is not hard to put together yourself. There are many "communities" to join that have complete directions on this process. You could also hire the job out professionally.
