The How-To Article

A writer need not be an expert in a subject to write about it. As you do your research you will gain expert knowledge in your chosen subject.

The How-To Article is best written when approached by the step method. This will be a How-To on how to write a How-To.

Step One: Before you begin to write, start with an outline. Go through the project yourself step by step. Make sure the steps are in correct order in your draft. You must assume the reader knows nothing about the intended project. Write in the imperative voice. The first word of every line of instruction should begin with a strong, active verb. Be certain your article is geared to the right age range. If parental guidance is needed or suggested, state this at the beginning.

Step Two:

Be practical when it comes to expense, safety and availablility of materials that will be needed. Younger children, of course, do not have the resources or access to stores to shop for materials. For example, if your how-to is about how-to make play-dough, use items that are found around the house, or that can be easily acquired by a child. Take safety into account also, especially when writing a how-to for younger children. Items such sharp scissors, or even combinations of certain household chemicals and solutions can be dangerous, especially when children are unsupervised. In a side bar or my some other method, let the reader know the materials and tools that will be necessary for the project. Pictures of steps are also very helpful to children that cannot read.

Step Three:

Ideas for how-to's need to be original or at least present a new twist on an old idea. Define any new terms that may need explanation. Let readers know where they should be at a particular point in the project. Example: "You should have three marbles outside the circle".

Step Four:

Be narrow in your focus. Do not try to teach a whole new concept or subject in one article. Break each one down into one aspect or feature. For example: How-To Play Marbles;instead of teaching many different variations on how to play marbles, break the article down to one focus, such as How-To Shoot Better or How-To Play Break the Ring. Focus on only one aspect at a time.

Step Five:

Like any other article or book, you need to hook your reader in the beginning with a strong lead. Convince your reader that they will be better or know more after they read your article. Do not use tired old cliche's such as; "how would you like to?", or "did you know?". Start with a dynamic statement or question. Go over the whole article as if you are the reader. Make sure everything is as clear and concise as possible.
