With the holidays approaching, it's a very good time to be thinking about adding to or starting your writing library. Be prepared when someone asks you want you want for a gift. Be ready to tell them exactly what you want. Having a good writer's library is a terrific investment. These are books you will refer to again and again in your career. They are always timely and when they are at your fingertips there is no price you can put on the time you can save.
If you have no library you can start one with just one book. Granted books are an expense, but writer's should see it as an investment in your career. Buy one at a time, one a month or however you finances will allow. But it is critical to have one. The following list of books are some of my most used and favorite. There are many many books on the craft of writing in the market place. My favorite place to purchase is Amazon. This list will be a good place to start. Most of the books are basic knowledge types. Some are inspirational and some are very topic centered. Hope they are helpful to you. Writing for Children and Teenagers, Lee Wyndam Published by Writer's Digest Books This book is a terrific resource and probably my favorite. Writing Books for Young People, James Cross Giblin Published by The Writer, Inc. Another must have book! You Can Write Children's Books, Tracey E. Dils Writer's Digest Books Very comprehensive. How To Write a Children's Book and Get It Published, Barbara Sueling Scribners Another great resource I would not be without. The Way To Write for Children, Joan Aiken St.Martin's Griffen This is a great resource by a popular children's writer. Children's Book Market by The Institute of Children's Literature This is an annual a writer for children cannot be without. Children's Magazine Market by The Institute of Children's Literature Another indespensible resource. How To Tell A Story, Peter Rubie and Gary Provost Published by Writer's Digest Books The secrets of writing great tales! Nonfiction For Children: How To Write It- How To Sell It, Ellen Roberts Published by Writer's Digest Books This is a great resource if you write non-fiction. Blood On The Forehead: What I Know About Writing, M.E. Kerr Published by HarperTrophy Another great book by a popular children's author. The A B C's of Writing Fiction, Ann Copeland Published by Story Press "An inspiring alphabet of ideas to stir you spirit and strengthen your prose" On Writing Well, William Zinsser Published by Harper and Row A classic must have book.
