A sidebar offers vital statistics and the easy to read but very informative text reveals their accomplishments. Black and white archival photos add great interest to the narrative. An exceptional resource for school or home. Elsie's War: A Story of Courage in Nazi Germany Frank Dabba Smith. Frances Lincoln Children's Books. 2005. Ages 8 to 12. This picture book tells the story of one woman's journey into the painful and awful nightmare of Nazi Germany. Elsie and her family helped many Jewish people hide and flee the country until someone found them out and reported them to the German secret police called the Gestapo. Emily was taken to a concentration camp and finally was liberated by the Americans in 1945. The authentic photographs add depth and dimension to the powerful picture book. A wonderful resource. Into the Volcano: A Volcano Research at Work Donna O'Meara. Kids Can Press. 2005. Ages 8 and up. Beautiful photographs and taken by the author and her expert knowledge of volcanoes make this book a must have. Supported by the National Geographic Society O'Meara is a world re known photographer, researcher and writer. The brief chapter provide an avalanche of information on volcanoes.
