5. SR: What were some of your favorite books as a child? What are you currently reading?

Bettye: As a youngster, I read and re-read WIND IN THE WILLOWS and the Little House books. Just now I'm reading Jaira Placide's FRESH GIRL and Christopher Paul Curtis' BUCKING THE SARGE.

Bettye's books include:

"The Patchwork Path" Illustrated by Erin Susanne Bennett (Candlewick Press, 2005) Story of a young girl fleeing to Canada to freedom and how quilt squares were used as a secret code.

"The Leaving" (Cavendish Children's Books) "Down Home at Miss Dessa's (Lee and Low Children's Books)
