Empowering Young Girls: Author Julia DeVillersthe earlier woman's movment (the 70's). They seem silent now, can you offer comment on this subject? JD: Wow. I appreciate that. Or, as my characters might say..."Um... "I will reflect on this one. I think it would take more space than I've got here. 7. SR: What advice to you have for a children's writer who wants to pursue a writing career in nonfiction? JD: I always want to caution people I've only been published for 2 years now, so I'm not the end all be all authority. I've found that people who have a credentialed background or a passion for a topic have a great chance at being published in nonfiction. You want to prove to a publisher not only is your idea marketable, but you're the best person to write it. Nonfiction can be a great way to break into publishing, by the way. 8. SR: Why did you decide to turn from nonfiction to fiction?? Which do you like better and why? JD: I'm still actually writing nonfiction, it just takes me longer due to research. I am wrapping up the Dorm Survival Guide for Random House to be out next spring (05). That said, nonfiction is enjoyable but I've discovered I absoutely love writing fiction. I love to create the characters and get into their heads. More writing, less research, more playing, sheer fun! 9. SR: Can you discuss any upcoming or current projects you have planned? JD: Sure, the dorm book, more Limited Too books and...my next novel for girls! I am writing that now and I'm excited. 11. SR: Do you have any plans to ever write for the adult market? JD: At the moment, I'm loving this niche. But I would like to try a book for women, possibly in a few years. No rush. But it does pique my interest. 12. SR: Please finish this statement: "Writing is......" JD: ... a joy... and to hear from girls who read what I've written and say my words have affected them in some way--makes it incredibly rewarding.
