But if I don't have a deadline on a project, I can put it off again and again, most often because a new deadline comes up and reorganizes my priorities.

That said, I finish enough to sell 15 to 20 pieces a year. Fortunately, my son goes to kindergarten next year so I'll have more time to work.

10.SR: What is your opinion of the state of children's publishing right now?

SBE: Since I started writing in the early 1990s, we've been hearing how bad things are, that they just aren't as good as they were 20 years ago, that it is almost impossible to sell a picture book manuscript.

That may be so, but I've got as much work as I can handle and almost always have an editor waiting for something. At the moment, my newspaper editor is waiting for that review, my Children's Writer editor knows I'm working on the historical fiction piece, due in mid- November, and my Children's Writer's and Illustrator's Market editor just assigned me two articles.

There's work out there if you're willing to do it. You just have to keep your ears open to find out what it is. There are so many possibilities if you are willing to stretch.

11.SR: Please finish this sentence... "Writing for children...."

SBE...is the best job in the world. I get paid to explore fascinating topics and share them with curious kids. If it is something you are passionate about, you too can find a way to make it work. You just need to find the solution for your situation so don't give up.
