And the column begins

© Nicholas Moreau

Hi there, welcome to Sesame Street-- I mean Suite 101.

This is my first column here on Children's Television.

I'm Nicholas Moreau, a high school kid from Canada. Why trust me? I've got no parenting experience and I'm above the target audience of the shows I review. Well, I just love the medium of television, and feel I have a keen eye for what makes a quality program. Though I watch the news, hockey, 24, Enterprise, Whose Line, and a variety of sitcoms, my heart has always swayed to children's television. More and more, the programs are very well crafted, creative works.

And I'm open to suggestions. Send in your constructive criticism, so I can tailor this column to you the reader, to push it beyond just something to entertain myself with. I guess could say that I don't want this to be my column, instead I want it to be ours.

I'll occasionally have interviews with actors, voice actors, puppeteers, producers, and other people who can shed some light on the medium. I'll review new shows, returning shows, TV special and movies, even old favourite from years gone by. The column will cover shows for 1-18 year old kids, but hover around the younger set. I'll of course direct the column to you, the parent, but who knows, I may eventually manage to arrange interview Dora, Bear, Stanley, Lunette, Clifford or Elmo give interviews your kids can enjoy.

At the end of each column, there'll be news flashes and a Q&A. But, I'll need your help. I can't have a Q&A without questions. Send them in; test me, the more challenging it is, the more interesting it'll be. New or old show, questions about specific episodes or characters, behind the scenes stuff. I'll send you a personal response to the question and then print in the next column.

In the coming weeks, I'll cover the overlooked sparkle of ZOOM!, whether kids shows should cover touchy subjects, Henson's new Animal Jam and whether the classic show Howdy Doody could or should ever return to the air.

I've got a list I've been working on, and I've already though of about three dozen things to discuss. But, this is our column— do you have something you'd like me to talk about? Tell me, so I can strike the head of the nail.

I'm glad to be part of your neighbourhood.

QUICK REVIEWS:

- Stuart Little's had his own cartoon for about a month now. If you haven't already heard of it, check it out. None of the original cast reprise their roles as voiceovers, but the show doesn't seem to suffer greatly without them. The only complaint anyone could have is the pace, which has slowed a bit, and the toned down writing. In comparison to the movie, it lacks; if you don't compare it though, it certainly comparable to any good show.
