Kids' WB! 2005-2006 Preview© Nicholas Moreau
Jun 7, 2005
The Kids' WB! announced its
new programs a few months ago, promising more programs that appeal to both
genders, something they've sorely missed in their first 10 years.
Loonatics
We all know and love Bugs
Bunny, Daffy Duck, the Tazmanian Devil, Porky Pig... but apparently we don't
love them enough to keep those Warner Brothers happy. Their new series
for the Merry Melodies stars, tentatively titled Loonatics, doesn't
take its plot from a classic animated short (Duck Dodgers) or bringing
the characters back a few years (Baby Looney Tunes). Instead, it
doesn't even star the characters at all.
Instead it stars the distant
descendants (think 700-years from now distant) of Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck,
the Road Runner, Lola Bunny, Tasmanian Devil and Wile E. Coyote, super-powered
and fighting crime in Acmetropolis. It's Tiny Toons meets Justice
League, if we have to ruin the reputations of other shows in this comparison.
I'll reserve my judgement until I can see whether the cookie crumbled favourably
for this possibly disasterous show.
It seems no "classic property"
can be left untouched. This is the same sort of fate The Muppets are facing,
starring as Wizard of Oz characters, teens, babies, just anything but themselves,
so much so that new generations will never know why these characters became
cool in the first place. At least the crew from the House of Mouse aren't
facing this sort of evolution - yet.
Johnny Test
"Action-comedy extravaganza"
Johnny Test is a program featuring "the always-eager experimental
team of Johnny and his genetically enhanced dog, Poochie." Wonder what
Johnny Quest thinks of this new comer?
Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island
According to the press release,
Coconut Fred's Fruit Salad Island is the "silliest spot in the Seven
Seas... where the energetic, eternally optimistic Coconut Fred and his fresh
crop of cohorts share their tropical paradise." I wonder if having health
lead characters qualifies this as educational content?
