The Pocket Snails series has won pre-release awards and endorsements from Dr. Toy, Creative Child Magazine, iParenting Media Awards, KIDS FIRST! Coalition for Quality Children's Media, and the Dove Foundation.

Simple yet satisfying, Pocket Snails is a worthy introduction for developing kids to learn the alphabet. Young Jake's snails travel on missions to help him out, being the supportive friends that they are.

The Pocket Snails (Gordon, Dale and Buttons) go on a quest to the hilly Letter Land, taking snapshots of each letter, to show Jake himself. The snails slide and jump past, and often on, each letter of the alphabet that they find on their map. You and your child can choose to watch the story with etiher the upper case letters, or the lower case letters. The production includes upbeat, age-appropriate music and songs, also available seperately as part of a CD soundtrack with lyric book.

Extra features on the DVD include fun facts about the three snails, a music player that plays the songs in the program, and interactive activities including the games "Begins with" and "Letter Pics".

A single, uncredited actor does the narration and voices for the DVD, a British tradition in itself. The British accent shouldn't get in the way of tots understanding. The pace is great, slow enough to fully grasp the concepts, but active enough to not be drudgerous. Unlike other shows that use repetition, such as the Teletubbies, Pocket Snails creatively reinforces when it presents the alphabet in different ways.

I'm curious of why it is that relatively similar trios of cartoon characters appear, they're always dressed in red, green and blue. Alvin and the Chipmunks, Hewey, Dewey and Louie, likely more. Of course, the leader of the trio always wears red. Kids love the colour, and so why not make the most appealing character even more appealing.

While its good for preschool- and kindergarten-aged kids to have the simple and effective visuals that Pocket Snails uses, the producers seem to be too Flash-happy at times, "cheating" in the way they move the characters. In otherwords, don't expect Disney, don't even expect Dora. It's still colourful and entertaining enough that I doubt most kids will really mind
