Scooby Dooby Doo, Boo Hoo Hoo
In an interview, Matthew
Lillard (the live-action "Shaggy") told SCI FI Wire that "[t]here will
be no Scooby 3." Scooby Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed made slightly
over $ 80 million at the US box office, short of the original film's $
154 American theatre draw. Lillard feels 2 was "much better" than
the original, and he thought that it was "going to do ridiculously good
box office. I mean, it did well, but it didn't do great, and it needed
to do great."
Lillard "completely hold[s]"
the blame for Scooby Doo 2's failure with Warner Brothers, in releasing
it in March 2004. Many others would completely hold the blame with Warner
Brothers for even making another Scooby Doo movie, but that's another
story.
Movie theatre owners quickly say: "Thunderbirds
away!"
In comparison, Scooby's
got nothing to complain about. The Thunderbirds movie, directed
by Jonathan Frakes. True to rumors, the Universal film adaptation of a
Puppetmation TV series entered the box office charts at #9, with
only an estimated $3.2 million take. Compare that to the failed Catwoman
movie, which managed to take in $6.2 million in its second miserable week,
if you'd like to add salt to the Thunderbirds wound.
Director Frakes is a great
actor, especially as Commander Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation
and its subsequent movies. But Frakes has a terrible time picking movies
to direct; anyone out there remember Clockstoppers? Anyone?
New Lucasfilm animation facility in
Singapore
TheForce.net
has reported on the opening spring 2005 of Lucasfilm Animation Singapore.
Lucasfilm will create games, and CG films and television, with a "new style
of animation that will blend East and West and offer something not seen
before." Lucas says that he has "been a fan of Asian animation and illustration
all my life," or at least since it became an extremely profitable craze.
White House angered by counter-terrorism
comedy
Comedy writer-directors
Matt Stone and Trey Parker are creating a CG animated feature called Team
America: World Police. However, the White House is furious. One Bush
advisor said last weekend that "I really do not think terrorism is funny,
and I would suggest Paramount give respect to those fighting and sacrificing
to keep America safe."
Parker said that President
Bush doesn't appear in the film, and that he would "ask that people wait
and see it, before passing a judgement." Their full response appears at
Ain't It Cool
News.
The film opens up two weeks
before the presidential election.
