Hasbro and Paramount to release movies based on G.I. Joe, Tonka, others.

The L!censing International 2004 convention ran from June 8-10 at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in New York City. There, many important deals were made or finalized. Among them was a partnership between Hasbro, Inc. and Paramount Home Entertainment.

An "agreement in principle" (as good as done, but not quite), that sees Paramount gain the worldwide distribution rights to a series of direct-to-video titles based on Hasbro brands. The deal involves Paramount marketing and distributing titles developed and produced by Hasbro. What toys will be the first to have their stories told? They're G.I. Joe, Transformers, Tonka, Duel Masters, Secret Central, the Weebles, and the classic kids boardgame Candy Land.

The September, look out for G.I. Joe: Valor vs. Venom and Tonka's Tough Truck Adventures: The Biggest Show on Wheels. Then, Transformers Energon and Have You Heard? Secret Central hit video store shelves the month after. Titles based on Duel Masters, the Weebles, and Candy Land, are expected to be released in the spring of 2005.

Notable quotables

"This new relationship with Paramount Home Entertainment is an exciting way for us to continue the legendary sagas of properties such as Transformers and G.I. Joe and to develop rich fantasies for new and classic brands."

Jane Ritson-Parsons, President of the Hasbro Properties Group

"We are very excited to work with Hasbro in bringing their exciting properties to the DVD world... this new product line will add significantly to our children's programming, appealing to boys and girls from their preschool to preteen years."

Thomas Lesinski, President, Paramount Pictures, Worldwide Home Entertainment

Pauper Barbie

If things keep up like this, Barbie's soon going to have a star of the Hollywood Walk of Fame. First an appearance in Toy Story 2, then three direct-to-video features, including Swan Princess Barbie, and Barbie as Rapunzel, Barbie's now proving that she's a triple-threat.

The classic tale of The Prince and the Pauper has been turned into Barbie: The Princess and the Pauper. And here I though Barbie was flamboyantly rich, with her personal jet planes, convertibles, and dozens of pets. Hah! Here she's on the verge of homelessness.

Featuring seven original songs, this modern retelling is coming soon.
