Sesame Street 35th Anniversary Special, this Sunday

Thirty five years.

Can you believe it? Sesame Street is starting into season thirty-five of educating millions of children in the US and world-wide.

The show that caused a revolution in children's television is celebrating this anniversary with a great primetime look back, called "The Street We Live On", Sunday April 4 at 8:00 PM ET/PT.

The debut episode of season 35, is a trip down memory lane for anyone who ever watched the show, as a child, or with their child. Known by some die-hard Sesame fans as the little red terror, but to most of the world as cute, fuzzy little Elmo, this show will explore the red-furred Muppet's inner-most thoughts and imagination, as he and Grover are transported back in time to the Sesame Street before Elmo was born.

Elmo meets the legendary gentleman behind the steadfast landmark, Mr. Hooper's Store; is on hand for Maria and Luis' wedding day; see the birth of their daughter Gabi; learns of when Gordon and Susan adopted Miles.

The whole episode ends with the entire cast singing a beautiful new song, "The Street We Live On". Elmo realizes that he doesn't have to dream to find his friends on Sesame Street - all he has do to is run outside to be a part of this very happy family.

Throughout the special, an all-star cast of celebrities reveal their favourite Sesame Street moments from the past three and a half decades.

"In honor of our 35th season, we really wanted to create an episode that not only celebrates our current generation of viewers, but was also a fond look back for many parents who were Sesame Street fans when they were pre-schoolers," noted Lewis Bernstein, Executive Producer. "However, our season is more about the future than the past. We remain committed to focusing on the fundamentals and how best to integrate the process of learning and entertainment. Since the world around our preschoolers is more complex, and more extreme, Sesame Street has become a silly safe haven: reasoning is modeled, conflicts are resolved and emotions are discussed, all with humor, music and joy."

The one-hour special repeats Monday, April 5 in the PBS Kids line-up, as the season opener.

Here's to one day, my grand-children watching Sesame Street.

On the fifth of April, I'll take a look at this season of Sesame Street, its goals, its new segments, its guests. Later on this year, I'll make an effort to profile as many people, characters, segments, moments, and ideas that have made Sesame Street special over the past 35 years.
